Jerry’s playing isn’t a flawless monument. But a love for still magnificence stems from a misunderstanding (and maybe fear) of life’s fluidity and unpredictability and a misguided belief that perfection exists. As a youth, I wanted flawless monuments to worship. They toured constantly, wrote and played new songs in new ways. Perfectionism favors rigidity, and, thankfully, I don’t think the Dead were about perfection. I think Jerry gets a bad rap, in part, because perfection was not an integral part of his or the Dead’s character. He both served and drove the songs, no matter where they were headed (hell, Jerry might be the Lao Tzu of guitar playing). Upward, downward, outward… he played music with shape, direction, dynamics. What’s the difference between a mixolydian exercise and a Jerry solo? A Jerry solo is always going somewhere. He could integrate his skills and used them, with grace and passion, to take songs (even very simple songs) to a higher place. But Jerry was more than the sum of his (very respectable) gifts. Jerry too had technical skill, fire, and access to a variety of styles and tones. There are faster players, there are bluesier players, there are players who achieved heavier tones in the studio and on-stage. They measure Jerry’s skill with metrics that no fan would emphasize, and they condemn him after ignoring the things that made him a great guitarist. I’ve worshiped many “great” guitarists (I taught myself to play by copping Hendrix and Page licks), and when people say that Jerry doesn’t measure up, I think they are saying more about themselves than about Jerry. I've been reading a lot about Jerry's guitar playing and have been shocked at how many players claim that Jerry wasn't a supremely gifted, top-tier guitarist. Even the dodgier shows retain something of that simultaneous tightness/looseness that you just don't see in other rock bands (jazz combos, on the other hand.). I'm loving my journey with the Dead and amazed at their inventive, fluid playing, night after night. Relatively new Dead fan and longtime guitar player.
